Regiments
At the commencement of hostilities General Penn Symons had approximately 13 500 troops at his disposal from both British & ‘local’ regiments that took part in the Natal campaign. The Imperial Light Horse in particular contained many of the Jameson Raiders some of whom had recently been released from after serving sentences for their part in the Raid. Later in the war countries friendly to the British cause sent Regiments among these were from Canada such as Strathcona’s Horse, Australia, India and New Zealand but none of these were involved in the Siege and Relief of Ladysmith.
GW Lines, the Ladysmith Town Clerk, kept detailed accounts of the military presence.
