Border Mounted Rifles




The Border Mounted Rifles was a southern Natal unit incorporating the Alexandra and Umzimkulu Mounted Rifles. From 1888 the BMI were known as the Right Wing Natal Mounted Rifles and in 1898 they had three squadrons, each of two troops. The Commanding officer was Major H.T. Bru-de-Wold. The regimental motto was “Rough but Ready”. The regiment served with the besieged forces and comprised 11 officers, 257 men, 334 horses. It arrived in Ladysmith on the 2nd October. They fought at Dundee and Elandslaagte and their casualties at the end of the siege was listed as 4 killed, 7 wounded and 13 died of disease.
