Lancaster regiment
The King’s Own Regiment, 4th Foot was formed in 1680 and amalgamated with The Border Regiment to form the King’s Own Royal Regiment. It’s most famous officer being General Sir Archibald Hunter, General White’s second in command during the Siege of Ladysmith.
The 2nd Battalion was ordered out on the 11th November 1899 and arrived in Capetown on Christmas Eve 1899. They sailed for Durban arriving there on 30th December 1899 and went on to join the relief force at Estcourt the following day. They took part in the Battles of Spioenkop, Vaalkrantz and the Breakthrough.
The regiment had the following casualties at the battle of spioenkop:4 officers and 56 other ranks killed; 4 officers and 90 other ranks wounded; 31 other ranks missing presumed prisoner.
