Graffiti

During the refurbishment of the various fortifications, within the siege perimeter of Ladysmith, many pieces of ‘art’ were uncovered, rocks bearing etchings and drawings. Some were very elaborate and artistic whilst others depict merely the name of an unfortunate soldier that had to serve within the fortification and all probably done to while away a very boring existence.

Petty Officer Franklin of the Natal naval Volunteers, in his diary entry for 28th November 1899, writes that he “….is cutting his name into a rock whilst the Fort is being shelled and one shell lands to the rear, striking the cookhouse…..”.

The photograph is of a rock in the Manchester Fort on Caesars Camp that is still there today.

RIFLEMANS POST

Other fortifications that have been refurbished contain graffiti and no doubt others will come to light as more areas are uncovered
