Ladysmith Town Clerk

GW Lines was the Town Clerk & during the siege compiled an inventory of everything that made up life during that period of the town’s history. He made detailed accounts of population & military sizes, ration allowances, laws passed & many other details. Sadly soon after the relief there was a fire in his office that destroyed many of his records & the following ‘booklet’ that he published contains less than a full list of the town’s occupants at the time but never-the-less a useful document for historians that have studied this period of the Boer War.

George Lines wrote a book about the siege that contains all manner of detail from army strength, supplies available, deaths during the siege and a Town Guard muster roll. Sadly a fire in the council officers soon after the siege was lifted destroyed a section of his death register so he was unable to compile a complete list of residenst in he town during the siege.
