Major Richardson

1    If you could hear the whoosh & whistle of an incoming shell, thank the Lord, for you were in a safe spot and would live to talk about your experience at a later date and time.

2    Late one afternoon, Grandpa rode off from camp to pick up wounded and dead soldiers and got lost in a heavy downpour of rain and the darkness of the approaching night. Eventually he spotted a light in the distance and rode towards the light.  On nearing the light he was suddenly challenged by a sentry and taken prisoner by the Boers.  Once the Boer Camp Commander interviewed Grandpa and learnt that he was a lost Medic searching for wounded and dead British Soldiers, Grandpa was fed and given a cot to sleep.   Next morning after breakfast a Boer soldier guided Grandpa to the top of a hill and was shown the way to get back to the British Camp.

3. The British soldiers in the camp to which my Grandpa was posted as a medic had noticed that a Boer soldier or observer was frequently visiting a nearby hill overlooking their camp in the evenings  The camp commander decided that it was time for them to do something about these frequent visits and so one afternoon, a British soldier was sent up onto the hill to take care of the Boer observer.   The evening went by and as it was becoming dark, the British soldier decided to call it a day and return to the camp and so he lit a match for a smoke. A rifle shot rang out and the British soldier was gravely wounded while the Boer observer melted away into the night as quietly as he had come.

I guess that the Boer War was a gentleman’s war ?
