Digby-Jones
Lieutenant Robert James Digby-Jones VC was born at Chester Street, Edinburgh on September 27th 1876 and was educated at Almwick Northumberland and at Sedbergh School, Yorkshire and passed into Woolwich in 1894. He was commissioned on August 5th 1896 and was posted to the 23rd Field Company Royal Engineers, becoming Lieutenant in 1899. He went to South Africa in June 1899 and took part in the Surprise Hill but was killed in action at Wagon hill, Ladysmith on January 6th 1900 and was buried in Ladysmith Cemetery. He was a nephew of Colonel R.H.M. Atkins V.C.
The Victoria Cross was sent to his next-of-kin by order of H.M. King Edward 7th on August 8th 1902.
