Jameson
Doctor Leander Starr Jameson was born in Edinburgh in 1853. He first trained as a physician then practised medicine in Kimberly where he met Cecil John Rhodes whose ambition was to get the whole of South Africa under the British Empire. After the abortive Jameson Raid he was handed over to the British who sentenced him to ten months in Holloway Prison but because of ill health he was out after eight. He next appears sick with disease in besieged Ladysmith.
He became a member of the Cape Colony legislature in 1900 and served as Prime Minister from 1904 to 1908. He was a member of the Union of South Africa Parliament from 1910 to 1912, when he was forced to retire due to ill health. He was created a baronet in 1911 and died in 1917.
