Steevens
George W. Steevens was the “London Daily Mail” correspondent in Ladysmith and co-editor of the Ladysmith Lyre. He died at 5pm on 15th January 1900, at the age of 29, of Enteric fever and all the London correspondents attended his funeral at midnight the same night.
His friend, Maude, of the “Graphic” was with him when he died and shared a last drink of champagne with him. Vernon Blackburn finished his uncompleted book “From Cape Town to Ladysmith”.
