Yule
Sir James Herbert Yule was born in England on 26th April 1847 and entered the army as an ensign in the 11th Foot.
He served in Afghanistan, Burma and India rising to the rank of Colonel in 1898. At the outbreak of War he was sent with the Devonshire regiment from India to become a Major-General on White’s Staff. He commanded the Infantry Brigade in Natal from the 5th October to 1st November 1899. Following Penn-Symons death at Dundee Yule took over command and successfully withdrew to Ladysmith. On reaching Ladysmith General White discovered that Yule was seriously ill and decided to send him out on the last train. Placed on half pay on 28th January 1900, he was later promoted to Major-General and knighted. He retired on 26th April 1904 and died in London on 7th May 1920.
