South African Light Horse
Raised at the Cape on the 8th November 1899 for the South African War they were 600 strong in eight squadrons and commanded by Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon. J.H.G. Byng.
The Regiment served with the relief force and was known as the “Sakabulas” from wearing the tail-feathers of that bird. The badge was a Maltese Cross with “SALH 1899″ on the arms and below the Zulu motto Usibu njalo nga pambili or “Feathers at the Front”.
